REX2-EA meter

The REX2-EA meter brings many enhancements that support emerging needs of smart grid initiatives, such as enhanced memory, greater security, and remote upgradeability. Developed with technology and communications flexibility in mind, the REX2 platform is both a smart metering endpoint and a gateway into the home supporting both 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz ZigBee communications.

The REX2 meter offers a flexible platform providing metering functions including bidirectional energy, power measurement, time-of-use (TOU) metering, interval data recording, and critical tier pricing. With the EnergyAxis System, any of these features can be controlled remotely.

When provided with the optional integrated service control switch, the REX2-EA meter may be used to remotely connect or disconnect service. The service control switch also provides load limiting functionality, allowing utilities to avoid expensive site visits.

The REX2-EA meter is available in standard residential metering form factors (1S, 2S, 3S, 4S, and 12S). The REX2-EA with internal service control is available in 1S, 2S, and 12S meters.

The demand source is used for up to 3 demand registers:

  • kW delivered
  • kW received
  • kW sum (delivered + received)

The 3 demand registers can be total kW or kW for a specific tier. The REX2 meter supports a 4-tier, 4-season TOU rate.

Demand is computed on 15, 30, or 60 minute intervals. The REX2 meter also supports subintervals. Demand may be assigned to 1 subinterval for block demand. Demand can also be assigned to 3 subintervals or 5 subintervals for rolling demand.

The REX2 meter provides interval data recording in 1 or 2 channels. The selectable interval lengths are 15, 30, or 60 minutes. End of interval (EOI) energy snapshots are provided to improve data validation.

The REX2 meter interval data is periodically transferred to the local A3 ALPHA meter/collector where it is stored until transferred to the EnergyAxis Metering Automation Server (MAS) via a public wide area network (WAN) connection.

The REX2 meter’s optional 200 A integrated service control switch can disconnect and reconnect the electrical service. Based on significant field experience, the REX2 meter’s service control switch has been optimized to provide low contact resistance for increased life. The REX2 meter supports advanced demand limiting and lockout functionality. The switch can be operated remotely through the EnergyAxis network or locally at the meter.

The REX2 meter uses full 128-bit AES encryption when communicating over the EnergyAxis network. The meter’s many status and error alerts are reportable though the network, quickly notifying the utility of possible meter tampering or energy theft.

In addition to remote meter configuration, the REX2 meter technology uses proven code management architecture to remotely upgrade of meter and communication firmware while ensuring network functionality remains intact without loss of metering data. This “over the air” reprogramming protects your AMI investment, meeting future requirements of your smart grid.

Elster's EnergyAxis® is an open standards-based advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system that improves efficiency and productivity, increases revenue by minimizing uncollectables and theft, and improves customer service. EnergyAxis provides intelligent, self-healing, two-way communications to all electric metering endpoints for scheduled and on-request reporting of energy, TOU demand, load profile, status, outage counts, and voltage. For residential meters, an optional internal service control switch can remotely disconnect and reconnect electricity service.

The capability of the EnergyAxis mesh communications network enables sophisticated billing and systems data collection, automated account management, and provides alerts for different events (such as outages, tamper indicators, and other system anomalies).

Elster is committed to supporting utility initiatives in energy conservation. Through its open architecture, EnergyAxis is able to integrate with third party electric load control devices, demand-side management devices, in-home displays, and pre-payment services.
